Summary
Provides administrative, operational, and clinical responsibilities for all services in the facility on evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Serves as the clinical resource person on patient care and services; acts as the patient care representative; collaborates with medical staff, ancillary support, and clinical services in order to ensure optimal patient care services and environmental conditions at all times. Responsible for notifying Administrator-On-Call of serious issues, incidents, and internal and external disasters.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Patient Care Organization
1. Assists with directing the operations of the Nursing Department on the off-shift.
2. Collaborates with the off-shift nursing resources to ensure quality patient care.
3. Collaborates with other departments to ensure resource availability for patient care needs on the off-shift, i.e., triaging AOC, BioMed, Occ Health (needlesticks)
B. Quality of Care
1. Serves as consultant and resource to staff and professional colleagues regarding administrative issues.
2. Participates in professional, institutional and community organizations.
3. Works collaboratively with other departments to monitor overall quality standards of the off-shift.
4. Applies theoretical and experiential knowledge of nursing to plan for needs of patients in collaboration with Primary Nurse.
5. Implements, reviews and revises patient care policies and nursing standards to ensure compliance of the nursing staff.
6. Directs operations by providing guidance to the nursing, medical, and support staff on the off-shift.
C. Coordination
1. Establishes and maintains effective professional relationships with interdepartmental personnel, professional staff, and the community.
2. Serves on Nursing Committees and Task Forces, Institution wide and Interdisciplinary.
3. Provides feedback to Executive Director/Nursing Director regarding the overall functioning of unit.
4. Provides feedback to other managers regarding functioning of their department.
5. Facilitates allocation of central resources in collaboration with staffing coordinators.
D. Financial Plan
1. Assists with the development of financial proposals to support programs identified for the off-shift.
2. Assists with the implementation and monitoring of the above programs.
3. Assists in determining cost effective strategies for patient care delivery.
4. Actively participates in the Department Financial plan: developing and managing the implementation and evaluation.
E. Personnel Management
1. Participates in the development of personnel policies for BWH.
2. Assists in administration of personnel programs, including communication and
implementation of personnel policies.
3. Performs administrative functions for the Nursing Department as assigned; including hiring, evaluating, disciplining, and terminations.
F. Education
1. Contributes to and encourages educational and professional development of staff nurses by assisting them to identify and meet their learning needs.
2. Assists in coordination of educational programs specific to unit/department needs.
G. Research
1. Demonstrates awareness of contemporary nursing research and works with nursing staff to
develop skill in the interpretation, application and utilization of research findings to the clinical setting.
2. Initiates and participates in nursing studies in the department

Education

  • 1. Bachelor's Degree Nursing required. Master's Degree Nursing preferred. Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No

Licenses and Credentials

  • 2. Registered Nurse in Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.

Experience

  • 3. Five years of clinical nursing experience required.

  • 4. Previous Nursing Leadership experience preferred.

  • 5. Past Nursing Administration/supervision experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients and families, nursing staff and other disciplines in all situations encountered.
* Must have demonstrated ability in management of diverse activities associated with operated the Nursing Department.
* Must possess solid clinical skills in order to provide direction, information, and explanation to all levels of hospital management and staff.
* Must possess communication skills adequate to provide necessary direction, information, and explanation to all levels of hospital management and staff.
