Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine and SLU Care Physician Group (SLU Care), the academic medical group of SSM Health, seeks a dynamic leader for the role of Chair of the Department of Adult Emergency Medicine.

This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the future of Emergency Medicine across the greater St. Louis area through the SLU School of Medicine and the SSM Health network, advancing both academic and clinical missions. The Department includes state-of-the-art medical education, compassionate patient care, and a growing research enterprise. With the integration of the School's physician practice organization (SLU Care) into SSM Health, Emergency Medicine, formerly a division, is poised for growth as a department across each of its mission areas of patient care, education, and research.

The inaugural Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine for the Department's academic mission of education and research and to the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs for its patient care mission.

Key Responsibilities

The Chair of Adult Emergency Medicine is responsible for the management of the Department functions, including education, research, and clinical services.

• Provide visionary leadership to the Department of Emergency Medicine, fostering a culture of excellence in clinical care, education, and research.
• Cultivate a collaborative working environment between EM faculty, emergency department (ED) staff, hospital administration, and interdisciplinary stakeholders from other departments.
• Manage and oversee the Department, including budgetary adherence and effective, sustainable utilization and stewardship of financial resources.
• Provide career support infrastructure and mentoring for medical students and post-graduate trainees with a focus on performance on national examinations and facilitating the transition to residency positions or first-job opportunities.
• Drive initiatives in clinical and translational research.

This Chair appointment within the SSM Health SLU Care Physician Group and SLU School of Medicine is open to those who can successfully apply for and complete the hiring protocols of SSM Health. The clinical duties associated with this position will be performed as a member of the SSM Health SLU Care Physician Group. The Chair will be wholly employed by SSM Health. The Chair education and research leadership roles, and academic rank will be designated within and supported by the SLU School of Medicine.

Education and Licensure

• MD/DO or equivalent with current Board certification in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).
• Eligibility for an unrestricted Missouri state medical license.

Experience/Competencies

• Credentials that merit appointment in the School of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
  Proven leadership skills in an academic environment, excellence in teaching, clinical practice, program development, and experience in research administration.
• Effective use of strong interpersonal and communications skills that incorporate an approachable, servant leadership style.
• Demonstrated ability to create an inclusive culture of physician engagement, accountability, and shared responsibility for patient safety and quality of care.
• Ability to nurture and grow fellowship offerings and programs.
• A commitment to wellness and professional development programs.
• A record of cooperative working relationships with colleagues including patients, physicians, nurses, administrators, managers, and other colleagues.
• Commitment to implement requirements and policies of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), SSM Health, and SLU School of Medicine.
