As a Labeling Specialist, you will play a key role in coordinating, developing, and organizing labeling and packaging for both Smithfield products and private label customers. You will collaborate closely with various departments-including Business Development, Quality Assurance, Research & Development, Product Integration, Sales, Marketing, and plant personnel-to create accurate and compliant regulatory content for product graphics.

In this position, you will be responsible for validating all regulatory information and claims on labeling and packaging, ensuring that every detail meets industry standards. You will also manage the creation of generic approval records and secure USDA sketch approvals, as needed, prior to plant production.

Your attention to detail and proactive approach will be essential in maintaining high standards and ensuring regulatory success.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Labeling Packaging Needs and Requirements: You will create and maintain CODE SOFT and/or Label Matrix labeling systems for PIC case labeling, ensuring all templates comply with USDA regulations and company production standards. You will collaborate with Business Directors and R&D to determine labeling requirements for new products, process templates for approval in CODE SOFT, and archive all necessary documentation in Laserfiche for future reference.

  • USDA Forms and Approvals: You will ensure that all printed packaging used by Smithfield Foods has USDA sketch and/or generic approval before being put into use. You will manage USDA approvals by utilizing the LSAS web portal for sketch approvals, working with third-party agencies for USDA LPDD approvals, and obtaining temporary approvals as needed. Additionally, you will keep labeling and packaging up to date for USDA compliance audits and maintain all approval records in the Laserfiche archive

  • Training & Miscellaneous: You will stay up to date on changes to USDA regulations, policies, and directives to ensure compliance and accuracy in labeling and packaging. You will also learn and utilize internal systems to complete required documentation while contributing to special projects and assisting other departments as needed.

WHAT WE'RE SEEKING:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 2+ years of experience with regulatory affairs in the food or meat industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of database software; Manufacturing software; Spreadsheet and Word processing software; PMDM system and SAP preferred.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Good decision making, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

  • Travel required, up to 10% of the time.

  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and respond to common requests about products and processes.

  • Must have the ability to complete required applicable forms in English, which requires the ability to read and write in English

OTHER SKILLS THAT MAKE YOU STAND OUT:

  • Knowledge of Food/Meat Industry concepts, practices, and procedures, preferred.
