Job Summary

Under the supervision and in coordination with the Director of Software Solutions and experienced development team members, the Junior Software Developer is responsible for learning and contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of university-wide software applications. This role involves working on guided tasks with mentorship, participating in code reviews, and gradually taking on more responsibility as skills develop. The Junior Developer will support systems that serve over 30,000 students, faculty, and staff across the university community.

Responsibilities
  • Write, test, and maintain code in Go, TypeScript, and PHP with guidance from senior developers
  • Utilize AI-assisted tools like GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to enhance development
  • Support system maintenance through debugging, code review, and stability improvements
  • Gain understanding of key university systems including enrollment, financial aid, and academic workflows
  • Implement assigned features and bug fixes following clear specifications and support
  • Participate in code reviews to strengthen coding practices and ensure quality
  • Develop and execute unit tests to enhance test coverage
  • Apply secure coding standards, especially when handling student data
  • Participate in daily standups, sprint planning, and pair programming sessions
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively using GitHub, G-Chat, Google Meet, and Zoom
  • Document code, maintain wikis, and update process documentation
  • Learn the university's tech stack, databases (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL), and cloud tools (Azure, Docker, CI/CD)


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent self-taught experience with a strong portfolio demonstrating programming competency

Required Experience
  • Recent graduate or early-career developer (0-2 years of professional experience)
  • Demonstrated programming experience through coursework, personal projects, internships, or co-op experiences

Preferred Educational Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Experience
  • 5-years of professional experience


Proposed Salary

$50,173 - $52,000

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.

ABILITIES

  • Proven proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office, Google, and/or applications as required for specific position
  • Ability to write readable, maintainable, and well-documented code that adheres to established coding standards and best practices
  • Capacity to learn and adapt quickly to new programming languages, frameworks, and tools with mentorship and guidance

KNOWLEDGE

  • Demonstrated understanding of core programming concepts, software development principles, and problem-solving approaches
  • Familiarity with at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, Python, JavaScript, Go, or C#) and version control tools for collaborative development

  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify and resolve technical issues
  • Effective time management and attention to detail to balance multiple assignments while maintaining code quality and accuracy
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, including the ability to receive feedback, ask questions, and work independently on defined tasks in a remote environment
