About the Department:
The Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center supports the fitness and recreation goals of a health-conscious community. Center management plans and implements a broad range of year-round recreational, educational, social, and cultural programs and activities to use the available facilities of the Center. These programs are designed to attract and serve a variety of individuals and user groups, including, but not limited to, the general public, youth, school and community groups, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
About the Position:
The Pool Manager is responsible for supervising pool operations and lifeguard staff to ensure facility safety and customer satisfaction. This position is responsible for the management of aquatic programs at the revenue-generating, community-based Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center at George Mason University. The Pool Manager is responsible for day-to-day operations associated with the provision of aquatic programs and for managing staff to ensure a high quality of experience to the community while generating sufficient revenue to meet budget projections.
Responsibilities:
Recruitment, Hiring, and Onboarding:
- Ensures facility safety and satisfaction of customer expectations by hiring and managing lifeguard and head lifeguard staff in accordance with safety standards and the Freedom Center business plan objectives;
- Hires lifeguards and assists the Assistant General Manager/General Manager in the hiring of head lifeguards;
- Actively recruits lifeguards at job/career fairs, local high schools, college campuses, and other community venues;
- Conducts interviews, hires staff, and assures all new hires or returning hires' paperwork is completed;
- Ensures that all prerequisite tasks and background checks have been completed before new employees begin work;
- Conducts orientation training for new employees before the start of their first shift;
- Trains staff on how to use Patriot Web and GMU email;
- Distributes uniforms to employees and maintains uniform inventory;
- Coordinates, plans, and facilitates in-service training and staff meetings;
- Assists staff with recertification of all required certifications at least 60 days before expiration;
- Develops incentives and rewards to encourage excellent work performance;
- Ensures lifeguard staff meets standards of care (including the 10/20 rule) at all times;
- Conducts periodic audit of staff, and informs them of needed improvements and timeline for compliance of deficiencies;
- Creates lifeguard schedule in accordance to the needs of the Natatorium and its activities at least two weeks in advance;
- Maintains up-to-date and accessible records of employee availability, including time off requests;
- Reviews and submits bi-weekly payroll, ensuring accuracy in payroll functions;
- Assists pool staff with issues that relate to payroll, human resources, etc.;
- Provides daily coordination of aquatic programs to ensure complete coverage;
- Ensures adherence to established safety procedures;
- Monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; and
- Monitors program performance and delivery through supporting staff in developing/following lesson plans to ensure progression of students enrolled in programs to retain customers and generate revenue.
Natatorium Operations:
- Keeps all functions within scope of ability and responsibility working properly 99% of the time;
- Reports all deficiencies that cannot be immediately corrected to Assistant General Manager/General Manager & Building Engineer within 24 hours;
- Maintains accurate and complete daily chemical readings, maintenance logs, and locker room and bathroom check records;
- Performs routine maintenance and safety checks per established maintenance schedules and ensures that all procedures are documented on pool and equipment;
- Trouble-shoots problems with pool chemicals or equipment;
- Performs minor repairs within guidelines established;
- Acts as head lifeguard or lifeguard on duty as needed to fulfill scheduling requirements;
- Maintains Guard Book to ensure the most up to date information is available to pool staff;
- Adjusts daily safety and maintenance checklists as needed;
- Purchases chemicals, uniforms, and other materials through eVA, and reconciles monthly purchase card statements; and
- Attends staff meetings and trainings.
Program Administration and Customer Service:
- Ensures program registration database and facility scheduling information is current and accurate;
- Purchases supplies and equipment for programs;
- Creates a welcoming and professional environment while maintaining the satisfaction of customer expectations;
- Responds to internal and external customer concerns in a timely manner, normally within 48 hours, and works in accordance with established policies/procedures for the Freedom Center to resolve concerns in a timely manner; and
- Creates and maintains lap lane availability board and daily charts.
Special Events:
- Assists with the administration of special events, including, but not limited to, swim meets, mini-tris, and after-hours groups;
- In absence of the Assistant General Manager/General Manager, assists with the scheduling of pool-only group events;
- Facilitates natatorium set-up for events;
- Skilled in set-up and use of the Colorado Timing System and performing minor maintenance of system;
- Acts as point of contact during events addressing any minor concerns within 2 hours and forwards any major problems to Assistant General Manager/General Manager within no more than 12 hours of knowledge;
- Ensures adequate staffing for special events;
- Assists as needed with the swim clubs, public and private schools, community groups, internal departments, and others to contract and schedule swim team use, swim meets, rentals, group use, open swim, aquatic fitness programs and aquatic fitness instruction in accordance with established Freedom Center use guidelines, membership, and programs demands;
- Assists as needed with user contracts, posting completed contracts, and tracking and posting payments for the contracts; and
- Creates and maintains the Aquatics Grid for optimal space utilization as needed.
Center Support:
- Supports the Center and its risk management and safety;
- Assists with facility-wide emergency response training on and recertification for Center staff;
- Ability to teach lifeguarding classes for the public;
- Assists in delivery of swim lessons, fitness programs, and rentals by maintaining lifeguard staff support systems, such as pool set up and clearing patrons from reserved spaces; and
- Acts as Manager on Duty on a regularly scheduled basis.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Demonstrated lifeguarding and pool operations experience (typically 3+ years);
- Experience instructing youth programming (typically 1+ years);
- Demonstrated supervisory experience (typically 2+ years);
- Ability to obtain Water Safety Instructor certification within 6 months of hire;
- CPR/First Aid/LG/CPO/AFO or equivalent;
- Knowledge of pool operations, risk management, and safety practices;
- Knowledge and ability to teach and perform lifeguarding, CPR-PR, first aid, and pool operation knowledge and skills;
- Knowledge of aquatics programming, Water Safety Instruction professional standards and regulations, and American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Programming; and
- Knowledge of and ability with management principles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field; and
- Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor certifications preferred.
