Job Summary

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Student Success provides visionary leadership to advance Georgia Southern University's mission of promoting access, academic excellence, and holistic student achievement across all campuses. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing, and Student Success, the AVP leads an integrated network of academic and co-curricular support services'including advising, academic success initiatives, student-athlete services, and first- and second-year experience'designed to enhance student retention, progression, and completion. This position plays a pivotal role in aligning institutional strategy, academic partnerships, and data-informed practices to drive equitable, coordinated, and sustainable student success from enrollment through graduation and beyond. The AVP consistently exhibits service, collaboration, and excellence as championed by the Division of Enrollment, Marketing and Student Success.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership, vision, and oversight for the Center for Advising, Retention, and Completion, Academic Success Center, Student-Athlete Services, and First and Second Year Student Experience. Oversee strategic planning, budget management, personnel supervision, and alignment of unit priorities with divisional and institutional goals.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated, and differentiated student success model that integrates academic, co-curricular, auxiliary, and support services to foster retention, progression, and completion.
  • Collaborate across colleges, divisions, and campuses to identify and remove barriers to student success, strengthen pathways for academic progression, and create a holistic environment that supports student achievement from entry to post-graduation outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Provost's office to identify curricular barriers to academic progression, participate in the curriculum development process via curriculum committees, and ensure effective first and second-year student experiences with high engagement of general education requirements and critical pathways for progression and graduation across all programs.
  • Lead student success information and technology strategies, including the building and maintaining of data systems, performance and indicator tools, predictive analytics, and facilitating university-wide student success strategies leveraging these tools.
  • Serve as a university-wide advocate for student success by effectively communicating goals, outcomes, and initiatives to internal and external stakeholders, fostering transparency, engagement, and alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Cultivate partnerships with external organizations, community colleges, and agencies to enhance transition pipelines, secure funding opportunities, and expand support services that strengthen student success and completion.
  • Monitor and interpret demographic trends, state and system-level policies, legislation, and national best practices related to student success; and ensure these insights are effectively disseminated across the university to inform strategy, planning, and practice.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth across all student success units by developing and implementing staff training, leadership development, and performance assessment initiatives that align with divisional and institutional goals.


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • Terminal Degree

Required Experience
  • At least eight (8) or more years of progressive experience and leadership in higher education
  • Effective leadership in student success (retention, progression, and graduation efforts) within an academic unit/department with demonstrated results and increasing levels of responsibility

Preferred Experience
  • Previous experience at a multi-campus institution

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.

ABILITIES

  • Proven proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office, Google, and/or applications as required for specific position
  • Demonstrated ability to listen, to synthesize information from a variety of constituents, and use that information to build consensus and/or make decisions.

KNOWLEDGE
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University's mission for student success
  • Experience using and analyzing data to lead, develop, and evaluate strategic initiatives that improve student success.
  • Knowledge of best practices for fostering student success and implementing change across an organization.

SKILLS
  • Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills
  • A successful track record of consensus building, and collaborative approaches to leading complex student success initiatives.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with experience creating and delivering effective presentations to internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data systems such as Slate, EAB Navigate, Degree Works, and Banner.
