General Description
The Department of Civil and Systems Engineering (CaSE)in the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is undergoing significant growth andinvites applications for faculty positions at all ranks in the area of data science and artificial intelligence (AI).We seek candidates who are advancing foundational AI methods, including machine learning and data science approaches, and who have demonstrated connections between their AI research and civil and systems engineering domains. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research has the potential to enable transformational impact on built and societal systems, including materials, manufacturing, construction, structures, communities and cities, public health, energy, and transportation. This may include data-driven discovery, design, modeling, simulation, decision-making, and/or policy development for sustainable, resilient, and autonomous systems and technologies in CaSE-relevant applications. The successful candidate will join a vibrant department with faculty working across numerous scales from atomistic to global, and across disciplines in civil and systems engineering, that share a collective desire to bring engineering solutions to society's greatest challenges. With a history of novel research in computational modeling, optimization, and uncertainty quantification in physics-based and data-based simulation, CaSE faculty enable engineers, decision-makers, and the public to find solutions to complex and challenging problems. CaSE has identifiedgrand societal challengesand has a strong desire to impact society in a positive manner through research and service. This position isenabled by a landmark investment in data science and AI and creation of the Johns Hopkins Data Science and AI Institute (DSAI Institute). The WSE at JHU is adding approximately 150 new faculty members over the next few years, constructing a new half-million square foot building to house the DSAI Institute, and deploying unparalleled computational infrastructure to support cutting-edge research and collaboration in this domain. In addition to joining the dynamic faculty of DSAI and CaSE, candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with and leverage new university-wide initiatives inpublic policyand sustainable energy (ROSEI), as well as additionalJHU SchoolsandCaSE affiliated centers and institutes. QualificationsApplicants must hold an earned doctorate in an appropriate field by the time of their appointment, have a record of research excellence and a clear vision for a research program in data science and AI for civil and systems engineering, and a commitment to high-quality teaching, mentoring, and inclusive excellence. Application InstructionsInterested candidates should submit the following documents through Interfolio: Cover letter describing the candidate's primary research expertise and envisioned integration with DSAI, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, copies of at most three recent publications, and names and contact information for three references. Priority will be given to applications received by November 30, 2025.
