Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
This position is filled by an experienced application developer. The incumbent applies both technical concepts and skills and knowledge of the company's internal policies and procedures to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways. The incumbent works on complex analysis and design assignments where significant initiative and independent judgment is often required to search out the appropriate course of action within and outside the context of established goals and objectives. This job requires that the incumbent be able to complete assignments that extend to new technologies and business processes with little to no assistance from management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Communicates fluently with the business representatives.
  • Understands business requirements and can relate these to the supporting system requirements producing technical specifications for the work to be done.
  • Codes readable, reliable, and maintainable programs in any of a variety of languages on multiple platforms necessary to support the team's assigned systems.
  • Prepares the initial problem definition, defines the project scope and objectives, determines the specific requirements to be satisfied, and designs system solutions for all levels of service requests.
  • Leads and/or provides guidance to junior team members.
  • Performs unit and system testing using test plans and scripts approved by the business.
  • Reviews test results with the business and makes the necessary adjustments to the deliverable.
  • Identifies and rectifies errors in coding quickly, showing initiative and a proactive approach.
  • Obtains an approval and submits proper documentation for migration to the locked-up production environment.
  • Records the time and status to the appropriate projects or support activity for billing.
  • Responds promptly to production issues by serving an on-call rotation for the 24-hour support of the team's systems, making decisions that will positively influence the up-time and full recovery of the team's systems from outages.
  • Provides analytical support for the ongoing maintenance of developed systems.
  • Understands and follows current corporate project management standards.
  • Communicates effectively with technical and non-technical teams; understands audience and adapts accordingly.
  • Prepares detailed definitions of proposed solutions which includes data base design, screen and report definitions, data flow, detailed transaction processing requirements, definition of system interfaces, detailed program specifications, and designing system test cases
  • Develops estimates of time and cost for the development and on-going operation of proposed service requests, and prepares analysis to show economic payout for the system
  • Documents conversion approach, task sequences, and dependencies for implementation plans
  • Designs and develops manual procedures and user documentation, and provides user training in the use of the developed system

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Six to eight years of experience.
  • Supervisory/management experience not applicable.
  • Additional Qualifications:
  • A minimum of five to seven years of experience. Similar industry experience preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education requirement.
  • Fundamental understanding of insurance products, which may include life, annuity, health, and/or P&C lines.
  • Successfully complete multiple LOMA courses from Level II - Functional Aspects of Life and Health Insurance series to obtain an FLMI: Fellow, Life Management Institute or CPCU courses to obtain their Certificate from American Institute for Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters.
  • Full understanding of software fundamentals and best practices.

OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The position is physically comfortable and has discretion about walking, standing, sitting, etc.
  • A person in this position normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.
  • The position requires physical presence in company office on full-time basis.
  • No adverse working or environmental conditions expected.
  • This position is an Individual Contributor.
