About Duke University Hospital

Working schedule:



  • Weekdays
  • On-call weekend rotation (1/month)
  • Day shift (8:00 am - 4:30 pm)
  • Occasional evening rotation



Position Summary: This individual supervises the performance of Pharmacy Procurement Technicians in a variety of routine and advanced technical duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs in accordance with standard procedures and techniques. This position will primarily be a first shift position with an on call weekend rotation once per month.

Specific duties include (but are not limited to):



  • General daily supervision of Pharmacy Storeroom Technician staff work duties.
  • Coordinating receiving and stocking of drugs and supplies in Pharmacy Storeroom.
  • Label and dispense medication to appropriate patient care locations.
  • Receive and process medication requests from clinics, labs, and other pharmacy areas.
  • Research and provide information where appropriate; refer other inquiries to pharmacist.
  • Auditing cycle counts of drug inventory by Pharmacy Storeroom technicians.
  • Auditing expiration date checking of drug inventory by Pharmacy Storeroom technicians, and
  • processing of expired stock.
  • Adhere to first-in first-out methodology for inventory distribution
  • Return to stock to wholesalers as appropriate; complete corresponding documentation.
  • Supervise duties of Pharmacy Storeroom technicians.
  • Training newly hired Pharmacy Storeroom technicians.
  • Generating Pharmacy Storeroom reports as scheduled.
  • Assist with managing drug shortages.
  • Create work schedule for Pharmacy Storeroom technician staff.
  • Manage internal projects as assigned.
  • Appropriate utilization of the Omnicell WorkflowRx software and associated carousel hardware
  • Appropriate execution of supplemental pharmaceutical and supply orders
  • Accurately fill and deliver departmental and interdepartmental requisitions
  • Independently able to identify appropriate storage conditions for pharmaceuticals, consistent with manufacturer labeling
  • Comply with OSHA, NIOSH, and USP <797> regulations for the safe handling of hazardous medications
  • Consistently provide exemplary customer service and professional conduct
  • Consistently leads Pharmacy Storeroom Technician staff by exemplifying Duke Hospital's values of Excellence, Safety, Integrity, Diversity, & Teamwork
  • Collaborate with team members to surpass customer expectations
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described above



Required Qualifications at this Level

Education



  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program.


or



  • Acceptance into pharmacy school.


or



  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care related experience.
  • College course work in business/management, position specific advanced coursework, and/or an equivalent combination is preferred.



Experience



  • Minimum of two years of pharmacy technician experience is required.



Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:



  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
  • Pharmacy Technician certification is required from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Proficient computer skills including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Requires critical thinking skills with ability to implement solutions.
  • Excellent customer service skills including prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure complete satisfaction.
  • Strong organizational skills including staying focused on assigned task and using time and resources effectively and efficiently to achieve job expectations.
  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, reaching, stretching, stooping, and sitting for prolonged times; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing functions of the job; ability to lift up to 50 lbs., while walking, stooping, bending and reaching.
