Responsibilities
  • Prepares various intravenous solutions and admixtures using aseptic techniques in the laminar air flow hood.
  • Processes physician orders for intravenous solutions in hospital computer system pursuant to pharmacist check.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders supplies accordingly.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Performs IV area maintenance and quality control activities on schedule.
  • Assists pharmacists in filling automated drug dispensing units and filling medication carts.
  • Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to clients and nursing units. Generate labels, processes charges and enters them into the hospital computer system.
  • Maintains IV Therapy in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.
  • Assist the pharmacist by providing pharmaceutical care for the patients ranging in age from neonate to geriatric. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations among different age groups and know to consult with the pharmacist if any doubt or questions arise.
  • Answers the phone in a professional manner; directs calls accurately.
  • Fills requisitions for Nursing units and other Hospital departments accurately.
  • Delivers medication and supplies per schedule and pick up returns.
  • Secures and destroys patient sensitive documents or labels that are not part of the patients record.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Serves as a member of the Disruptive Person team which provides safe, prompt intervention when an individual is posing a threat or danger to self, others, and/or property.
  • Assists pharmacists with training of technicians-in-training and pharmacist interns.
  • Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filling physician orders.
  • Inventories expired drugs and stores appropriately under the pharmacists' direction.
  • Adheres to departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education:

High school graduate or general education degree (GED)

Experience:

Hospital pharmacy experience preferred

Must be able to calculate figures/numbers and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filling various physician orders

Must be able to generally recognize inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups

Working knowledge of computers including information systems, automated pharmacy systems, typewriters, IV laminar flow hood or the willingness to learn

Ability to meet time frames for work completion

Effective skills at team work and team facilitation

Effective written and verbal communication skills

Maintains patient confidentiality at all times

Meets dress code standards as outlined in hospital policy

Certification/Course:

Registration with Board of Pharmacy required within 30 days of hire.

Certification through National Certification Board required. New hires have 12 months to achieve certification through examination.
