DESCRIPTION OF WORK
-
Sailing from her homeport at the Erie Maritime Museum in Erie, PA, the U.S. Brig Niagara is a fully functional, traditionally rigged brig engaged in sail training and historical interpretation. Through the up rig, maintenance, operation, and down rig of the ship, the Niagara program preserves, interprets and passes on the traditions of what life was like for sailors living, working, and fighting aboard a square-rigged sailing ship in the early 19th century.
As an Engineer, you will serve as the crew leader for all work involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of Niagara's modern equipment and systems. You will ensure that the mechanical and domestic systems are maintained in fine working order, implementing preventative maintenance plans, identifying challenges to safe and efficient operation, making repairs, and maintaining guidelines, standard operating procedures and log books. You will be responsible for keeping mechanical areas neat and organized, ensuring that tools are in good working order and the inventory of necessary supplies is up-to-date. You will create and manage work lists, assigning and supervising various tasks while training less experienced crew, volunteers, and trainees in those tasks and in seamanship in general.
Additionally, you will assist in the interpretation of the ship, offering museum guests a glimpse into life aboard a 19th century sailing vessel. You will assist in keeping the ship, shop and berthing area clean, tidy and presentable to museum guests and the general public. Interested in learning more?
