The Position
-
Instrument Worker IIs (IWIIs) perform a variety of sub-journey level inspection, maintenance, and repair of metering and recording instruments, controlling apparatuses, data logging and display equipment, and communications and telemetering systems used in large metropolitan water distribution and wastewater treatment facilities.
IWII's can advance to Instrument Worker III (IWIII) and eventually to Instrument Technician (IT) by gaining experience and achieving proficiency which meets the requirements of the higher-level classification. Part of the process to advance to an IWIII and IT is to demonstrate competency through a combination of performance evaluations and successful completion of competency tests.
The ideal candidate will have:
*A solid understanding of hand and power tools used in electrical and instrument repair.
*Mechanical ability and knowledge of arithmetic and mechanical principles.
*Knowledge of basic electrical safety practices.
*Ability to read shop drawings and electrical diagrams.
The salary range is $8,435 per month increasing to $8,857, $9,300 and $9,765 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements

1.A high school diploma or its equivalent, and
2.Twelve months of experience equivalent to EBMUD's Instrument Worker I classification.
Completion of an accredited community college or comparable certificate program in instrumentation technology or closely related field, acceptable to EBMUD, may be substituted for the required twelve months of experience.
EBMUD candidates must have achieved satisfactory completion of the On-the-Job Training, vocational school, and self-study courses specified in EBMUD's Maintenance Trades Training Program for Instrument Technicians, including supervisory certification of proficiency. Candidates hired for Instrument Worker II positions must advance to the Instrument Worker III within 18 months of appointment.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2026. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.
2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3.All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to a written test tentatively scheduled for Saturday, February 28, 2026.
4.Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
5.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
6.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
