Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Scope of Duties

  • Animal care and room sanitation.
  • Monitoring and supporting animal health.
  • Record keeping and documentation.
  • Maintenance and animal husbandry activities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling experience or experience operating lab animal sanitation equipment.
  • Ability to communicate animal health information to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to maintain clear, legible, and permanent records.
  • Basic computer skills, including email usage.
  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple laboratory animal species used in biomedical research.
  • Ability to identify animal health concerns and regulatory compliance issues and report them to veterinary staff, researchers, and compliance personnel.
  • Full working knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
  • Experience using cage washers and autoclaves for cleaning and sterilization.
  • General knowledge of federal and other regulatory agency requirements.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or collaboratively.
  • Satisfactory job performance during probationary employment.
Technical & Computer Skills
  • Email communication.
  • Scanning cage barcodes.
  • Syncing PDAs for electronic Health Surveillance Reports.
  • Completing online training.
  • Submitting electronic timesheets
Physical & Safety Requirements
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach overhead, and work on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including:
    • Protective clothing
    • Safety glasses
    • Safety shoes
    • Gloves
    • Face masks
    • Respirator (if assigned)
  • Ability to push, pull, and safely lift/move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to comply with work rules, including:
    • No eating or drinking in animal areas
    • No smoking at campus facilities
Education, Training, and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED and completion of training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS) certification and one year of animal care experience

OR

  • High school diploma or GED and two years of animal care experience with species relevant to the role

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
