Required QUALIFICATIONS




Required Education:
Two (2) years of post-secondary education with course work in General Physics sequence with a lab component and an upper-division physics sequence at a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
Required Experience:
The equivalent of two (2) years of experience directly related to equipment and apparatus found in physics labs and demonstrations.

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS










Preferred Education

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a physics from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Physics lab coursework.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in an physics laboratory setting, supporting such work in an academic or industrial setting where substantial training occurs.
  • Experience in an academic laboratory with progressively increasing responsibility for laboratory preparation.
  • Experience as a teaching assistant or tutor in physics lab classes.
  • Community college experience.

Position Purpose:
The Physics Lab Specialist prepares rooms and materials for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations, ensures proper storage of apparatus, and does routine maintenance on this apparatus.
Essential Functions:

  • Using set-up sheets or instructions developed by Physics faculty members, prepare materials for laboratory activities and lecture demonstrations, including trouble-shooting and testing equipment to ensure quality and correct set-up.
  • Maintain work area and rooms in a clean and safe condition by timely clean-up, facilitating the replacement and repair of broken equipment, and returning materials and equipment to their proper storage location.
  • Coordinate use of lab materials and equipment with Physics faculty members making use of the equipment in their classes.
  • Learn, use, and contribute to the Physics lab support infrastructure, including set-up sheets, inventories, maintenance schedules, and scheduling protocols.
  • Assist in the monitoring of all laboratory-lecture rooms used by Physics.
  • Assist in the maintenance of software in all laboratory-lecture rooms.
  • Assist faculty members coordinating lab activity in managing and directing student interns, including work-study students.
  • Collaborate with faculty when necessary and appropriate.
  • Follow appropriate procedures for use and safe handling of equipment and materials.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Physical Science Laboratory Coordinator, and evaluated by the Division Dean. Work is performed independently using specialized experience and training. Work is reviewed for the quality and efficiency of tasks. This position may have responsibility to assign tasks, provide priorities and train student assistants, volunteers and hourly employees.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:

  • Work Safely, including following college and division rules, procedures, and Chemical Hygiene Plan assigned trainings; follow OHSA guidelines in support of the Laboratory Standard.
  • This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors.
  • Sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to set up and operate equipment.
  • Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students.
  • Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate and repair lab and demonstration equipment.
  • Physical ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. At least seventy percent of the job duties require standing.
  • The job requires some kneeling, stooping, crouching, standing on a small platform to reach high cabinets and shelves, plus lifting and transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds on a general basis, and rarely up to fifty (50) pounds.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and Skills in:

  • Laboratory and lecture-demonstration management, and knowledge of physics equipment.
  • Reading and following set-up sheets.
  • Safe handling and safe operation of electronic and mechanical equipment.
  • Trouble-shooting and testing lab and lecture-demos, including related software.
  • Effective organization and communication. Using basic office software tools.
  • Creating just-in-time demonstration apparatus.


Ability to:

  • Set-up and maintain laboratory and demonstration apparatus in a safe, clean and functional manner.
  • Organize laboratory and demonstration equipment for set-up and problem-solve regarding this.
  • Operate microcomputer, copier, audiovisual equipment, and other lab/program equipment.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Independently perform the duties of the position efficiently and effectively.
  • Handle electrical equipment, mechanical systems, and computer-interfaced sensors on a routine basis.
  • Work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.
  • Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes.
