Who we are and What we do:

TennCare is Tennessee's managed care Medicaid program that provides health insurance coverage to certain groups of low-income individuals such as pregnant women, children, caretaker relatives of young children, older adults, and adults with physical disabilities. TennCare provides coverage for approximately 1.7 million Tennesseans and operates with an annual budget of approximately $14 billion. It is run by the Division of TennCare with oversight and some funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Job Overview:

The Division of TennCare is seeking an Appeals Litigation Administration Legal Assistant in the Appeals Operations Group within Member Services. The Appeals Litigation Administration Legal Assistant will be responsible for performing administrative functions on behalf of the Appeals Operations Group such as working closely with a team of attorneys to ensure appeals are moving timely through the continuum, providing data statistics on hearing related matters, and documenting changes to workflow as they occur.

This position will also be responsible for creating electronic records of appeal requests, arranging for translation services when appropriate, maintaining attorneys' calendars, hearing calendars and the litigation timetables for attorneys. Additionally, the Appeals Litigation Administration Legal Assistant will be responsible for researching, reviewing, and implementing all court orders rendered from an appeal hearing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete special projects as assigned
  • Maintain hearing and attorneys' calendars as well as litigation timetables for attorneys
  • Track Notices of Hearing using FedEx and USPS
  • Prepare documents for the court to aid in dismissal of appeals
  • Manage workflow to ensure deadlines are being met for multiple attorneys
  • Demonstrate attention to detail in researching appeal cases and documenting notes for proper case processing
  • Make phone calls as needed to verify information with appellant regarding appeal
  • Attend and actively participate in all unit meetings and problem-solving discussions for workflow improvements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited college, university, or professional school with one of the following: (1) an Associate's Degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant studies; (2) a bachelors degree in paralegal or legal assistant studies; (3) a Paralegal Certificate; or (4) one year (28 semester hours) of graduate level law school.

Substitution of experience for education:

  • Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school and two years of full-time experience in researching legal issues and documenting findings to assist in building case files, settling legal disputes, and/or providing legal counsel to clients.

Special Qualifications:

  • Complete a criminal history disclosure from in a manner approved by the appointing authority
  • Agree to release all records involving criminal history to the appointing authority

Desirable Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, preferably in business administration, management, public health or health policy
  • Experience within TennCare
  • Experience in customer service
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to foster and maintain cohesive working relationships
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, multi-task and manage workload to meet specific timeframes and deadlines
  • Advanced writing and communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Excel
