Role of a Associate General Counsel: AL/GL Claims
This position is located at the San Francisco Corporate Office
Manages Auto and General Liability claims, overseeing investigations, evaluations, and resolutions, while directing litigation strategy for complex cases and ensuring compliance with legal and internal standards.
Essential Responsibilities
- Oversees investigation, evaluation, and resolution of Auto and General Liability claims, including bodily injury and property damage.
- Develops and implements strategies to handle AL/GL claims, reduce AL/GL exposure, and lower AL/GL spend.
- Directs and manages litigation strategy for complex liability cases and attends mediations, settlement conferences, and hearings.
- Analyzes liability exposure, advises on risk mitigation strategies, and ensures adherence to legal requirements and internal policies.
- Negotiates settlements, approves payments within authority limits, and manages third-party administrators and outside counsel for performance.
- Coordinates with risk manager to establish reserves.
- Manages outside counsel.
- Travel may be required for mediations, hearings, and site visits.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of legal experience, with significant exposure to insurance defense, auto liability, and general liability claims.
- JD degree and active CA state bar membership required.
- Proven track record in managing complex liability claims and litigation.
- Experience negotiating settlements and handling high-value cases (up to multi-million-dollar exposure).
- Strong understanding of insurance law, policy interpretation, and regulatory compliance.
- Familiarity with subrogation, fraud detection, and reserve setting.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage external counsel.
