Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Outpatient Pharmacy Services, the Manager of Centralized Medication Access provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the pharmacy-led centralized prior authorization (PA) and medication refill program. This role drives departmental success by ensuring that the Supervisor, frontline technicians, and pharmacists consistently meet performance targets. Key priorities include process design, inter-departmental collaboration, and scaling the department to meet organizational growth. Additionally, the Manager partners with the Director to steer the centralized access strategy and collaborates with Outpatient Pharmacy Managers to optimize revenue and prescription capture.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $169,400 - $290,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of services for patients cared for by the Medical Center at UCSF and its providers and payors. These services include, but are not limited to: drug procurement, storage, and security; safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the Medical Center; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is affiliated with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic department within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, clinical research, and public and clinical service.

Required Qualifications


  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.
  • Post graduate year 1 [PGY1] In Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience.
  • Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
  • Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of industry best practices in outpatient pharmacy practice. Stays updated on pharmacy regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of all pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations. Ability to apply policy knowledge to improve workflow systems and protocols.
  • Recent leadership experience with exposure to training and guiding employees on technical skills in outpatient pharmacy area. Motivates and inspires staff to improve quality and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
  • Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner. Ability to apply policy knowledge to identify productivity inefficiencies and compliance risks.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, patients, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff.
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve patient problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
  • Ability to listen actively to clinical staff and patients, understanding varying viewpoints and receiving feedback. Verbal and written communication skills to tactfully articulate reasoning behind own opinions and change the thinking of or gain acceptance from others.
  • At least 5 years of outpatient pharmacy experience and 3 years of management experience

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology and train others to effectively use applications.
  • Post grad 1 In Pharmacy Practice or Hospital Administration, or equivalent experience preferred.

License/Certification


  • Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
