Overview

The Surface PostLaunch Engineering team is responsible for sustaining and evolving the software that powers Surface devices in the hands of millions of customers. The team works across a broad portfolio of inmarket Surface products, partnering closely with hardware, systems, and architecture teams to solve complex, realworld challenges at the intersection of PC hardware and software. Engineers on this team contribute across the software stack-diagnosing and resolving customerfacing issues, delivering performanceoptimized features, and continuously improving the reliability and usability of Surface experiences as products evolve over time.

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in PC systems to design and deliver features that span lowlevel, midlayer, and upperlevel software. In this role, you will apply your understanding of modern PC architecture to solve complex, crossstack engineering problems and produce highquality code optimized for highvolume consumer products.

You will collaborate closely with electrical engineers, system engineers, architects, and fellow software engineers to drive solutions from concept through delivery, contributing to shared technical outcomes across hardware and software boundaries.

Responsibilities
  • Support postlaunch software development for inmarket Surface devices shipped to retail customers.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve customerfacing software issues across the supported Surface product portfolio.
  • Perform root cause analysis across hardware-software interactions to identify and implement durable fixes.
  • Design and deliver valueadded software features that improve usability, reliability, and overall customer experience.
  • Contribute to codebases spanning multiple active Surface products, adapting to frequently changing product and technical contexts.
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional partners, including hardware, systems, and software engineering teams, to deliver highquality solutions.
  • Demonstrate ownership and problemsolving skills when working in complex, ambiguous, and fastmoving technical environments.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred qualification:

  • Experience with embedded firmware and PC driver development, including work with UEFI, operating system drivers, 32bit and 64bit microprocessors, and common interconnects such as IC, SPI, and other I/O buses.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, debug, and troubleshoot firmware and lowlevel software on multiprocessor systems using code debuggers and hardware diagnostic tools.
  • Handson experience using hardware debugging tools such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG, flash emulators, and incircuit emulator during firmware or driver development process.
  • Proficiency in C language development; experience with C++ or other higherlevel languages, or hostlevel application development, is a plus.
  • Experience developing PCbased drivers, interface applications, or supporting scripts.
  • 5+ years of experience contributing to product development in the consumer PC or consumer electronics industry.
  • Experience collaborating with external development partners and highvolume manufacturers to bring consumer electronics products to market.
  • Experience using AIassisted tools to support coding, code review, or repository analysis (AIbased code generation, GitHub/repository analysis tools).
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly in written and verbal form, including explaining designs across abstraction levels (i.e., architecture diagrams through sourcelevel code).

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
