I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:
GW Information Technology (GW IT) provides empowering tools and caring support for all members of The George Washington University (GW) community. We are focused on driving digital transformation and innovation to enable the academic and operational excellence of our students, faculty, staff, and researchers. At GW IT, we are committed to cultivating a team culture that values diversity, inclusion, respect and collaboration, and invests in each of our team members to grow in their technology and career skills.

The AV Engineer I reports to the Manager of Audiovisual Design and Engineering and supports the operational reliability and lifecycle management of an enterprise audiovisual ecosystem spanning more than 650 instructional, meeting, and collaboration spaces. Distinct from traditional event production or broadcast roles, this position focuses on sustaining standardized, network-integrated AV systems across a campus setting.

Our team provides enterprise-grade audiovisual solutions by working collaboratively with both internal IT and university partners to drive digital transformation. In this role, you will serve as an individual contributor working under limited supervision, applying hands-on technical expertise to maintain consistent performance and service quality across a large-scale, campus-wide AV environment.

Your job duties will include:

  • Enterprise Technology and Service Collaboration: Serves as aTier 3 escalation resource for a large-scale enterprise audiovisual infrastructure supporting more than 650 collaboration and learning spaces. Works closely with peer IT teams, Facilities Management, academic departments and other university service providers to sustain reliable, coordinated service delivery across the campus.

  • System Reliability & Proactive Operations: Supports the consistent performance of the enterprise AV fleet by utilizing enterprise monitoring and management platforms (e.g., Crestron XiO Cloud, Biamp SageVue) to perform proactive health checks and identify emerging issues. Performs advanced signal flow analysis and complex hardware and cabling remediation to resolve systemic problems escalated from front-line support teams.

  • Network-Integrated AV Troubleshooting: Diagnoses and resolves issues within a converged AV/IT environment, including Audio/Video over IP endpoints such as Crestron NVX, VLAN configurations, and network-centric control systems. Collaborates cross-functionally with networking and systems teams to implement durable, scalable resolutions appropriate for an enterprise campus environment.

  • Incident Response & Root Cause Analysis: Participates in AV incident response and problem-management activities, contributing technical expertise to identify root causes of service disruptions. Focuses on resolving recurring architectural and configuration issues rather than one-off hardware failures to improve overall system resilience.

  • Knowledge Sharing & Technical Development: Provides technical guidance and informal mentorship to junior-level AV technicians and support staff, sharing best practices related to enterprise troubleshooting, remote management platforms, and standardized operational procedures to promote consistent service outcomes across teams.

  • Standardization & Continuous Improvement: Contributes to ongoing efforts to refresh, standardize, and sustain baseline performance across the enterprise AV environment. Leads small-scale projects to align spaces with established standards and evaluates emerging audiovisual technologies by developing functional proofs of concept for review by the AV Design and Collaboration Spaces team.

  • Commissioning & Technical Documentation: Performs system commissioning for permanent AV installations and maintains accurate technical documentation for deployed systems, including firmware versions, network addressing, and configuration standards, ensuring the integrity of the system data of record.
