Overview

Leads the planning and day-to-day operations of facilities and plant systems across hospitals, clinics, and off-campus properties. Directs maintenance staff and vendors to deliver preventive and corrective maintenance, inspections, utilities management, grounds and building repairs, with 24/7 accountability for safe, sanitary, and reliable environments. Drives performance improvement, cost containment, and asset lifecycle planning; partners with clinical and non-clinical leaders to minimize disruption to patient care and provide responsive service. Ensures compliance with regulatory, accreditation, Environment of Care, and Life Safety requirements, and supports capital planning and project execution.

Responsibilities

Operations and Personnel Management

  • Lead plant operations and building maintenance across hospital facilities, including chiller, boiler, emergency power and related building systems
  • Direct Facilities Supervisors and staff in prioritizing preventive and corrective maintenance work orders for buildings, grounds and off-site locations
  • Maintain a safe, functional facility 24/7 and coordinate planned and unplanned utility outages to prioritize patient care
  • Manage training, competency, succession and just culture for mechanics and operations staff; recruit, coach and evaluate team members
  • Monitor and improve the work order system to ensure accurate data, timely completion and quality follow-up
  • Provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, fire/life safety and building systems expertise to staff and customers
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with vendors, contractors and internal stakeholders; oversee service delivery and customer satisfaction

Regulatory Compliance and Performance Improvement

  • Ensure compliance with TJC, DNV, CMS, NFPA, FGI, OSHA and other authorities having jurisdiction for the healthcare environment
  • Verify regulatory testing, inspections and documentation for life safety systems, utilities management, Environment of Care and emergency operations
  • Chair or participate in required committees and rounds; develop and maintain management plans, policies and procedures for Facilities
  • Track performance, analyze results and drive corrective actions for facility programs; champion proactive maintenance over reactive maintenance
  • Coordinate disaster response roles within the incident command structure and support continuity of operations

Planning, Construction and Infrastructure

  • Develop multi-year infrastructure plans and long-term business plans, including FTE needs and operational priorities
  • Partner with Planning, Design and Construction to review projects, maintain facility standards and manage engineering projects for infrastructure improvements
  • Lead design, selection, installation, operation and maintenance of replacement equipment and building systems
  • Organize, coordinate and oversee contractor work; manage property-related services and maintenance for off-site locations
  • Advance energy conservation and reliability initiatives across utilities and building systems

Fiscal Responsibility and Contract Management

  • Develop and manage expense budgets for multiple cost centers and utility usage; monitor budget performance and payroll/invoicing for Facilities
  • Identify, request and manage capital projects and equipment in partnership with leadership
  • Approve purchasing requests, service contracts and contractor payment applications; ensure contract compliance and value
  • Partner with system teams to identify savings opportunities and optimize total cost of ownership

Qualifications

Associate's Degree

Required

Associate's degree in facilities management, engineering, or a related technical field. Acceptable alternatives: accredited trade school diploma or private/military facility management training with technical coursework (e.g., boilers, chillers, refrigeration, electrical/electronic fundamentals, hydraulics), or 4 years of equivalent experience in facility plant operations management in lieu of degree.

Bachelor's Degree

Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, facilities management, business administration, or a related technical field.

Work Experience

5 years

Required

Plant operations or facilities maintenance experience in large facilities with exposure to mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and painting; familiarity with DNV, OSHA, NFPA, IBC, NEC, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

3 years

Required

Direct supervision or management of maintenance/plant operations teams, including operational budgeting.

8 years

Preferred

Experience in a hospital engineering or maintenance department, including 3 years in a supervisory role.

5 years

Preferred

Management of a maintenance department in a healthcare setting, including supervisory responsibilities.
