Overview Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of steam distribution mains, services, customer piping systems, and associated equipment. This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan. Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Supervise a team of 8 to 12 union mechanics in the operation and maintenance of the steam distribution system.
- Oversee and account for the use of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Schedule and manage personnel to optimize productivity and meet operating objectives and system constraints.
- Administer and monitor safety, environmental, and training programs.
- Ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures, including EEO, Substance Abuse, Security, Environmental, and Code of Conduct requirements; develop and review steam distribution maintenance procedures.
- Maintain departmental Quality of Life and Customer Service Index goals; investigate and resolve customer issues and complaints.
- Ensure work schedules comply with all PSC requirements for traps, inspections, and calibrations.
- Prioritize and coordinate work activities and logistics to minimize impact on city events, traffic, community operations, and steam service.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of relevant work experience, preferably in the field operations, or
- Associate's Degree and four (4) years of relevant work experience, preferably in the field operations, or
- High School Diploma/GED and five (5) years of relevant work experience, preferably in the field operations.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and two (2) years of relevant work experience, preferably in the field operations.
Relevant Work Experience
- Ability to acquire and apply working knowledge of steam distribution piping systems and related equipment, including installation, maintenance, and repair activities, required.
- Experience in emergency response under the Incident Command System (ICS) and qualification as a HAZWOPER First Responder, required.
- New York City/New York State Asbestos Supervisor and NYS Inspector certificate must be obtained within 1 year of job assignment, required.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills along with the ability to work as part of a team, required.
- Supervisor experience, preferred.

Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
- Perform work in underground vaults through manholes
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
