Job Description

The Account Manager, Specialty Foam is an outside sales role responsible for driving sales of polyethylene extruded closed cell plank foam and related services within an assigned multi-state territory that includes Canada. This position focuses on selling to fabricators who convert foam into protective packaging solutions for end markets such as automotive, military, electronics, and more.

The sales model involves two key approaches: equipping fabricators with the right products to help them be more competitive and profitable, and a pull-through model where the Account Manager identifies end users who need help and connects them back to fabricators. All business is routed through fabricator partners.

This role manages a defined geographic territory as a standalone business, developing growth opportunities with existing customers while identifying and qualifying new accounts. The Account Manager works closely with internal teams including customer service, engineering, procurement, production, and shipping to ensure accurate pricing, timely delivery, and strong customer satisfaction.

The position is remote and field-based, with regular travel throughout the territory.

Territory:

New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Canada

The role is posted as remote with a preference for candidates located in New York or New Jersey. The candidate must live in the territory they are supporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Use direct sales techniques to build and grow sales within an assigned geographic territory, balancing hunter and account management approaches
  • Manage and grow relationships with existing customers who purchase large volumes of foam, often truckload quantities
  • Identify, qualify, and develop new business opportunities aligned with territory growth goals, with a strong emphasis on prospecting and new account acquisition
  • Contact regular and prospective customers to demonstrate, explain, and recommend products and services
  • Conduct sales presentations and provide product education, technical information, and samples
  • Answer customer questions related to products, pricing, availability, applications, and credit terms
  • Leverage the pull-through sales model by identifying end users who need packaging solutions and connecting them to fabricator partners
  • Monitor customer preferences and buying behavior to adjust sales focus and territory strategy
  • Work closely with Customer Service and Portfolio teams to prepare and approve customer quotes
  • Consult with customers after sales or contract execution to resolve issues and provide ongoing support
  • Identify prospective customers through referrals, business directories, industry organizations, and trade shows
  • Collect and analyze customer data to identify market opportunities and factors influencing demand
  • Maintain and manage a sales pipeline across the territory
  • Prepare sales reports, maintain customer records, and submit expense reports
  • Document customer interactions, orders, inquiries, complaints, and follow-up actions
  • Identify complex issues and coordinate internal resources to develop and implement effective solutions
  • Communicate regularly with cross-functional teams and coordinate activities to support customer needs
  • Travel a minimum of 3 days per week (typically Tuesday through Thursday), primarily by car throughout New England with air travel approximately 10-15% of the time for Canadian accounts

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, or three to five years of related sales experience, preferably in industrial manufacturing, plastics, or packaging materials, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience selling within industrial or manufacturing environments preferred
  • Plastics, foam, and/or packaging experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience managing large accounts with high-dollar volume preferred
  • Hunter mentality with strong prospecting skills, paired with the ability to cultivate and grow existing accounts
  • Strong working knowledge of sales techniques, product presentation, and territory management
  • Ability to assess customer needs and deliver solutions that support long-term account growth
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Intermediate computer skills including email, CRM or database tools, word processing, and spreadsheets
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based, cross-functional environment
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach
  • High level of reliability, accountability, and attention to detail
  • Valid passport required for travel to Canada
  • French language skills are a significant plus due to French-Canadian customer base
