DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Medical Records Technician, you will maintain the integrated health record system for incarcerated individuals, ensuring all documentation aligns with Department of Corrections policies and federal health care standards. Your core responsibilities will include coding diseases and treatments using the Diagnostic Related Group (DRG) system, as well as maintaining the secure filing, retrieval, and transfer of clinical records in strict accordance with confidentiality laws. In this role, you will serve as a bridge between clinical staff and administrative oversight. You will be responsible for auditing medical entries for accuracy, referring incomplete documentation to physicians or nursing staff for correction, and identifying quality patterns for the Corrections Health Care Administrator. Additionally, you will represent the institution by presenting records for legal proceedings. By monitoring the flow of health information during inmate transfers and discharges, you will ensure continuity of care and institutional compliance across the correctional system.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Special Requirement:

  • You must be in possession of a valid Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certificate or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certificate issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or eligibility for certification including completion of an AHIMA approved RHIT or RHIA Health Information Management education program.
Post Employment Requirement:
  • If you meet the Special Requirement based on the eligibility option for the RHIT or RHIA certification, you must obtain one of these certifications within 12 months of employment.
Other Requirements:
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
