I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION






Job Description Summary:
Founded in 1824, the GW School of School of Medicine and Health Sciences ( SMHS) is the 11th oldest medical school in the county and the first in the nation's capital. Since its establishment, the school has been at the forefront of medical education, and has grown to include highly-ranked programs in the health and biomedical sciences. The Gross Anatomy Lab, housed within the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, supports an integrated, clinically oriented anatomy curriculum for medical, graduate, and health professions students. The program emphasizes cadaver-based dissection, anatomical sciences education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of anatomy with radiology, embryology, pathology, and clinical medicine.
The department seeks a Director, Anatomy Labs to oversee the operational, instructional, safety, and strategic functions of the Gross Anatomy Laboratory and associated teaching spaces.

Leadership and Program Administration

  • Provide executive leadership for the Human Anatomy Body Donor Program, overseeing cadaver procurement, regulatory compliance, and operational strategy.
  • Direct a regulated human tissue program, ensuring compliance with institutional, local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Serve as primary liaison between faculty, anatomical curators, administration, and external vendors.
  • Develop and implement program policies, procedures, and operational workflows.
  • Oversee donor records, documentation systems, and regulatory reporting.
  • Supervise and manage laboratory staff and technical personnel, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Coordinate and manage cadaver utilization across educational and research programs.
  • Ensure Body Donor Program is compliant with all institutional, local, state, ad federal regulations.

Core Facility Operations & supervision of the Gross Anatomy Laboratory (GAL) Facilities

  • Report to the Gross Anatomy Oversight Committee and Vice Dean for Research and Academic Affairs on the usage of the laboratory spaces regularly throughout the year.
  • Develop and implement compliance and usage standards for all GAL requests, including photography and videography.
  • Direct operations of a multi-user gross anatomy laboratory supporting medical education and research.
  • Establish and enforce laboratory usage policies and compliance standards.
  • Oversee laboratory scheduling, setup, and logistics for multiple programs and stakeholders.
  • Manage equipment lifecycle, including procurement, maintenance, and performance optimization.
  • Coordinate facility maintenance, upgrades, and infrastructure improvements with institutional partners.
  • Oversee inventory systems for anatomical materials, equipment, and laboratory supplies.
  • Ensure adherence to biosafety, chemical safety, and human tissue handling regulations.
  • Oversee adherence to and updating safety protocols, OSHA standards, and formaldehyde testing in the laboratory.
  • Lead institutional oversight of laboratory safety programs, including OSHA compliance and hazardous exposure mitigation.
  • Supervise the work and efforts of the GAL staff.
  • Maintain readiness for regulatory audits and inspections.
  • Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and ethical stewardship.
  • Maintain stocking of supplies and materials for educational programs
  • Coordinate with the Office of Resource Management for maintenance of physical space, including cleaning and laboratory upgrades.
  • Coordinate with internal and external groups for development, set-up, and break down of all laboratory sessions, including PPE usage, donor and teaching materials, and all compliance and paperwork.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for staff, faculty, and students.

Academic & Institutional Engagement

  • Coordinate with teaching faculty in the development and maintenance of all teaching specimens (e.g., prosections, skeletons, models, etc.)
  • Lead educational initiatives to secure funding for GAL improvements (e.g., physical space, technology, specimens)
  • Serve on the Departmental Gross Anatomy Oversight Committee.
  • Serve on other committees and task forces related to the above functions as necessary.
  • Represent institution in professional organizations and external collaborations.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities related to GAL Manager role.

Financial & Resource Management

  • Assist the Chair of Anatomy and Cell Biology in the development of the annual budget relating to purchasing anatomical teaching materials.
  • Work with the Vice Dean for Research and Academic Affairs to develop the annual budget for cadaver acquisition, laboratory facilities maintenance and repairs, laboratory equipment maintenance contracts, annual laboratory cleaning, supplies, tools, and PPE purchases.
  • Support financial planning, cost control, and resource allocation.
  • Identify and plan for special projects.

Scholarship & Professional Activity

  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and professional dissemination.
  • Participate in curriculum development, program evaluation, and educational innovation.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Masters, plus 6 years of experience or a PhD plus 3 years of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Hiring Range $81,626.35 - $159,351.96
