Description

Are you passionate about helping older adults build strength, improve mobility, and maintain their independence? Do you believe fitness has the power to transform lives at every age?

The YMCA of the North Shore is seeking an energetic and knowledgeable Senior Fitness Instructor to lead high-intensity fitness programs designed specifically for active older adults. This is an exciting opportunity for an instructor who can motivate participants, create engaging workouts, and help members safely challenge themselves while improving their overall health and well-being.

We're looking for someone who understands that older adults can achieve incredible results with appropriately designed, evidence-based exercise programs. You'll create an encouraging environment where participants build strength, endurance, balance, confidence, and a sense of community.

Experience working with individuals living with Parkinson's disease or other neurological conditions is preferred, particularly within high-intensity or evidence-based fitness programs, but not required.


What You'll Do
Lead Dynamic, High-Energy Classes

  • Design and lead high-intensity fitness classes for older adults
  • Incorporate strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, balance, mobility, and functional movement
  • Challenge participants appropriately while maintaining a safe and supportive environment
  • Provide modifications and progressions to accommodate varying fitness levels


Support Healthy Aging

  • Help participants improve strength, endurance, coordination, and overall quality of life
  • Encourage confidence, independence, and long-term fitness habits
  • Create workouts that support real-world functionality and everyday movement


Build Relationships & Community

  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive class atmosphere
  • Build meaningful relationships with participants and encourage ongoing engagement
  • Motivate members to reach their personal health and wellness goals
  • Create a positive experience that keeps participants coming back


Ensure Safety & Excellence

  • Monitor participants and provide guidance on proper exercise technique
  • Maintain a safe exercise environment and respond appropriately to participant needs
  • Stay current on fitness trends and best practices related to healthy aging and neurological conditions


What We're Looking For

  • Experience leading group fitness classes
  • Strong understanding of exercise principles and functional fitness
  • Ability to safely coach and motivate older adults in a high-intensity setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for helping individuals improve their health and quality of life
  • Experience working with Parkinson's populations or specialized older adult fitness programs preferred

Qualifications

  • Experience working with older adult populations required
  • Experience working with individuals with Parkinson's disease or similar conditions preferred
  • Current Group Exercise, Personal Training, or Senior Fitness certification (ACE, AFAA, NASM, etc.)
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe)
  • Strong understanding of functional fitness, mobility, and injury prevention
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patient, encouraging, and able to adapt to individual needs
