Job Summary

The HVAC/R Mechanic II is responsible for providing skilled maintenance support for commercial and industrial HVAC and refrigeration systems that support manufacturing, research, laboratory, and office environments. This role performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, installations, and mechanical overhauls on a wide range of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and environmental control equipment. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while maintaining compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Job Responsibilities



  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on commercial and industrial HVAC/R systems and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including air handlers, compressors, pumps, chillers, boilers, environmental chambers, incubators, dehumidifiers, freezers, refrigerators, and ice machines.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on fans, valves, actuators, variable air volume controllers, motors, circulation fans, and associated mechanical and electrical components.
  • Install, replace, and maintain bearings, seals, belts, gaskets, coils, and other HVAC/R system components.
  • Perform brazing and soldering activities related to heating and cooling equipment repairs and installations.
  • Interpret HVAC/R control theory and apply troubleshooting techniques to air handling and refrigeration systems.
  • Install and maintain refrigeration equipment and accessories in accordance with engineering and operational standards.
  • Utilize diagnostic and testing equipment, including pressure gauges, vacuum gauges, leak detectors, torque wrenches, multimeters, and amp meters.
  • Order replacement parts and materials required for maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform mechanical overhauls and system upgrades as required.
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document maintenance activities, preventive maintenance schedules, and equipment history.
  • Support building maintenance, pipefitting, and other skilled trades assignments as required.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with operational teams to minimize disruptions and ensure equipment reliability.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, productivity, cost reduction, and customer satisfaction.
  • Follow all safety procedures, quality standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with larger projects and provide leadership support on multi-person maintenance assignments when required.


Job Requirements



  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial or industrial HVAC/R maintenance experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC/R mechanical systems, controls, equipment operation, and maintenance practices.
  • Experience working with air conditioners, air handlers, compressors, pumps, chillers, boilers, refrigeration systems, and environmental control equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment documentation.
  • Experience using diagnostic tools, gauges, leak detection equipment, and electrical testing instruments.
  • Knowledge of HVAC/R control systems and air handling system operations.
  • Experience performing brazing and soldering activities.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and CMMS systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and safely in a commercial or industrial environment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to comply with safety, quality, environmental, and regulatory requirements.


Work Experience



  • Minimum of 5 years of formal training and hands-on experience maintaining commercial or industrial HVAC/R systems.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, laboratory, pharmaceutical, research, industrial, or large commercial facilities preferred.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred.
  • SAP experience is preferred.
  • Purchasing or procurement-related experience is a plus.
  • EPA certification for refrigerant recovery, handling, and disposal is preferred.
  • Experience participating in emergency response or on-call maintenance support is preferred.
