What You'll Do

The Principal Data Analytics Engineer provides strategic leadership in the design and development of Denodo data virtualization services to optimize data usage for Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. This highly visible role within Tufts Technology Services (TTS) and TUSDM requires deep technical expertise and cross-functional collaboration. In this role, the engineer will serve as the first line of technical support for data usage needs and will be responsible for providing customer support across all levels-from frontline troubleshooting to executive-level consultation. The position also includes documenting technical and functional requirements to ensure clarity and alignment across teams and stakeholders. A key responsibility is the development of dashboards and delivery of actionable analytics using tools such as Tableau and Power BI, supporting data-driven decision-making across the organization. The engineer will frequently be called upon to provide expert guidance and consultation to other TTS groups, senior administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing support of data virtualization architecture to optimize data movement, transformation, and utilization across Tufts University School of Dental Medicine
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for TUSDM, providing first-line support for data usage needs and ensuring responsive, high quality customer service across all levels of the organization.
  • Collaborative with internal stakeholders to gather and document technical and functional requirements, translating business needs into scalable data solutions. Partner with internal customers to design and implement event-driven systems tailored to their operational and analytical needs.
  • Develop and maintain interactive dashboards and analytics reports, enabling data-driven decision-making for faculty, staff, and senior administrators.
  • Provide expert technical guidance and consultation to senior administrators, faculty, and staff; convene and lead data analytics initiatives involving complex applications of data science, technology, and learning science; offer strategic technical leadership across Dental IT and TTS to advance data capabilities and infrastructure; and stay current with emerging data engineering and analytics tools and technologies, proactively evaluating and recommending solutions to enhance institutional data strategy.
  • Successful TTS staff are known for effectively applied expertise, continuous learning, thoughtful attention to detail, timely and appropriately calibrated follow-up, proactive and constructive problem solving, openness to new approaches, and for building effective partnerships and trust within TTS, across the university, and (where relevant) with external partners. All TTS staff are expected to follow departmental shared administrative practices, including effective planning and communication around time off, attending required TTS and university trainings, and developing professional goals as part of the PDP planning process. TTS staff are also responsible for working in ways that align with the TTS vision statement and for being aware of and following individual group and department-wide shared practices.
  • Coach and mentor more junior staff in the adoption of TTS department-wide shared practices. Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive culture that empowers cross-functional teamwork. Actively participate in ELT workshops, trainings, and meetings.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:
  • Bachelor's Degree Knowledge and experience typically acquired through the completion of a BS and 8 plus years of experience Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Computer Science with 10+ years of experience Preferred
  • Expert Tableau and Power BI skills
  • Strong SQL skills
  • Demonstrated experience in working in Denodo
  • Basic familiarity in the area of data virtualization
  • Staff must have a personal mobile device to be reached after hours or while on campus if needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science with 10+ years of experience

Pay Range

Minimum $128,500.00, Midpoint $160,700.00, Maximum $192,800.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
