About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Budget & Planning, the Financial Analyst supports financial planning and decision-making through budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and data analysis. The role works closely with academic and administrative departments to monitor performance, control costs, and ensure compliance, while identifying opportunities to improve processes and systems. A core responsibility is managing position control (roster tracking) to align staffing plans with budgets and support informed resource decisions. The Financial Analyst also provides Workday support and training and contributes to the institution's long-term financial sustainability.



Responsibilities

Budget Development & Management

    Assist in the preparation, consolidation, and monitoring of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Collaborate with department heads to gather financial data and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Maintenance of position control (roster) records and tasks, using judgment to escalate approval decisions

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze budget variances and provide actionable insights to improve financial performance.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management review.
  • Weekly reconciliation of position budget to operating budget
  • Analysis of headcount trends across position types and divisions

Forecasting, Planning & Budget Oversight

  • Develop financial models to support forecasting and long-term planning.
  • Review insufficient fund notifications and collaborate with departments to post budget amendments as needed.
  • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.

Cost Control & Compliance

  • Monitor expenditures and recommend cost-saving initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with internal financial policies and external regulations.

System & Process Improvement

  • Support the implementation and enhancement of budgeting tools and financial systems.
  • Streamline reporting processes to improve accuracy and efficiency.

Training & Operational Support

  • Provide training and guidance to staff on Workday financial systems and budget procedures.
  • Act as Expense Operations Lead (approver), ensuring submissions are accurate, policy-compliant, and properly documented.


Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree required. Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred).

Experience:

3+ years of experience in financial analysis, budgeting, or accounting, preferably in a higher education or public sector environment.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of federal and institutional financial policies and procedures.
  • High attention to detail and discretion with confidential information.
