Senior Manager Environmental Remediation (SB 31) or Manager Environmental Remediation (SB 30) Montana, Seattle / Tacoma, or Denver Salary Band 30/31, dependent on candidate's experience and education Reports to Assistant Director Environmental Remediation Officed Location TBD in one of the following areas: Montana, Seattle / Tacoma, or Denver Duties: Responsible for directing environmental remediation projects in the states of Montana, Washington, Wyoming and Colorado consistent with BNSF guidelines. Duties will include selecting and implementing environmental remediation alternatives; negotiating with state and federal agencies on clean-up standards; negotiating with third parties on cost-recovery efforts for clean-up sites; and acting as a first responder to derailments and emergencies that could potentially impact the environment. The position will manage the reduction in environmental liability of BNSF's legacy sites by managing environmental remediation projects through technical expertise and consultant management, negotiating with governmental agencies and affected parties (inside and outside BNSF) to complete timely and effective remediation of sites, and ensuring cost estimates are submitted in compliance with the guidelines established for the Environmental Reserve. Position will negotiate with agencies to ensure remedies are protective of human health and the environment while being financially reasonable. Qualifications: A Bachelor of Science degree in a field related to environmental remediation (SB30) is required and a post-graduate degree (SB 31) is preferred or strongly preferred. Environmental remediation experience is required (5+ years for SB30 or 10+ years for SB31). Requires extensive knowledge of environmental regulations (e.g. RCRA, CERCLA, OPA) pertaining to environmental remediation, spill reporting, etc. Requires knowledge of liabilities associated with environmental issues. Requires knowledge of chemistry, chemical hazards, tank cars and health and environmental impacts of chemical releases. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with negotiation skills, are a must. Must be able to become an OSHA-trained hazardous material adviser. Registered Professional Engineer, Professional Geologist or another certified professional is highly desirable. Additionally, knowledge of contaminant migration in soil and groundwater, experience managing environmental consultants, experience working in a railroad environment, and experience managing multiple projects is desired.
