We operate a private fleet supporting our nationwide distribution network, and we are seeking a skilled Safety & Compliance Trucking Manager to strengthen our transportation safety culture and ensure regulatory compliance across all operations.
Position Overview
The Safety & Compliance Trucking Manager is responsible for overseeing all regulatory, and compliance functions for Bernhardt's private fleet transportation operations. This role ensures adherence to FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and company standards, and leads initiatives that promote a safe, compliant, and efficient operation. The ideal candidate brings strong industry knowledge, leadership skills, and a passion for building a proactive culture of compliance and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain full compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and all applicable federal and state regulations.
- Oversee driver qualification files, MVR reviews, drug & alcohol testing programs, and annual compliance audits.
- Manage Hours-of-Service (HOS) monitoring and ELD system oversight.
- Prepare for and lead regulatory inspections, audits, and internal compliance reviews.
- Track Compliance performance and present reports to leadership
Safety Program Management
- Work with the director of Safety for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies and procedures related to FMCSA, DOT and OSHA
- Work with the director of Safety to conduct regular driver safety meetings, ongoing training programs, and corrective action coaching.
- Manage incident response, accident investigations, root-cause analyses, and submit to HR any corrective action plans.
- Track safety performance metrics and present reports to leadership.
Fleet & Operations Support
- Collaborate closely with Dispatch, Fleet Maintenance, and Operations to ensure safe practices across the entire transportation workflow.
- Work with Operations to hire CDL drivers and support onboarding of new drivers through orientation, road evaluations, and training.
- Assist in equipment specification, inspection programs, and maintenance compliance coordination.
Risk & Claims Management
- Maintain documentation for insurance, accident files, workers' compensation claims, and related reporting.
- Partner with HR, Legal, and Risk teams on claims handling and preventative measures.
Other Functions
- Work with Transportation Program Manager on projects, process improvements, and process documentation.
Qualifications
- 3-5+ years of transportation compliance management experience (private fleet experience preferred).
- Strong working knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, and OSHA regulations.
- Experience managing ELD systems (e.g., Omnitracs, Samsara, KeepTruckin, etc.).
- Excellent communication, training, and coaching skills.
- Ability to lead safety culture initiatives and engage drivers effectively.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and organizational skills.
- CDL Class A license preferred, but not required.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in furniture, manufacturing, or private fleet transportation environments.
- Accident investigation or safety certification (e.g., NATMI CSS/DSC, OSHA 30, Smith System, etc.).
- Knowledge of fleet maintenance processes.
