Job Summary:

The Office of Medical Education seeks experienced DOCS faculty to serve as DOCS Lead Coach (0.1 FTE) beginning around July 1, 2026. This role is intended for experienced DOCS coaches who have demonstrated excellence in delivering the DOCS curriculum and can contribute to the ongoing development and performance of current DOCS coaches.

All first-year students enrolled in CUSOM's Trek curriculum participate in weekly small-group clinical skills training during their preclerkship year as part of the Developing Our Clinical Skills (DOCS) course. This dynamic, experiential course is designed to produce humanistic student physicians by developing their foundational clinical and professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes via an integrated curriculum. The curriculum emphasizes communication and interpersonal skills, cultural humility, physical examination, clinical reasoning, and professional development while promoting patient-centered care, teamwork, reflection, and coach-learner partnerships. Standardized patient interactions also comprise significant portions of the course.

The primary responsibility of the DOCS Lead Coach will be to directly observe the DOCS coaches facilitating small group sessions to provide them with feedback geared toward development of their coaching skills and maintenance of consistency in the DOCS curriculum delivery. The secondary responsibility will be to serve as a DOCS coach substitute to ensure continuity in learner experience when needed by the course.

DOCS Lead Coach will report jointly to the DOCS Course Directors and the Director of Clinical Sciences.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead Coach:

* Review DOCS coach self-assessment forms and prior feedback before direct observation sessions.

* Conduct direct observations of DOCS coaches during small group sessions.

* Provide focused, actionable feedback to DOCS coaches based on observation of small group sessions.

* Reinforce DOCS curriculum standards and coaching model principles.

* Contribute to the maintenance of a skilled cohort of DOCS coaches.

DOCS Coach Substitute

* Participate as a DOCS coach substitute when needed by course.

* Prepare to facilitate small group sessions by reading the course syllabus as well as session-specific materials provided by the course directors.

* Commit to the delivery of the course curriculum within a coaching model.

* Collaborate with other DOCS course faculty and staff/members of the teaching team to ensure an effective learning environment.

* Attend DOCS coach faculty development sessions that happen 4-5 times a year.

* Collaborate with 4th-year students, residents, and fellows enrolled in teaching electives to facilitate small groups.

Student Assessment:

* Directly observe students' clinical skills and provide constructive, formative feedback.

* Evaluate student performance on DOCS assessments

* Participate in grading of assessments

* Communicate effectively with other DOCS course faculty and staff/members of the teaching team regarding specific student concerns and/or needs.

* Evaluate students in other portions of the Trek curriculum as needed within the defined FTE.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible to work in a hybrid capacity and work on-site as needed for meetings and appointments. The employee must reside in the United States.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

* Prior experience with DOCS program at the University of Colorado SOM as a DOCS coach.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor, Senior Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Instructor:

* M.D. or D.O. Degree or equivalent with a concentration in healthcare and education and medical licensure in the State of Colorado.

* Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment instructor rank at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

* Minimum of two years' experience teaching medical students

Senior Instructor:

* M.D. or D.O. Degree or equivalent with a concentration in healthcare and education and medical licensure in the State of Colorado.

* Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment Senior Instructor rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

* Minimum of two years' experience teaching medical students

Assistant Professor:

* M.D. or D.O. Degree or equivalent with a concentration in healthcare and education and medical licensure in the State of Colorado.

* Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment Assistant Professor rank at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

* Minimum of two years' experience teaching medical students

Associate Professor:

* M.D. or D.O. Degree or equivalent with a concentration in healthcare and education and medical licensure in the State of Colorado.

* Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment Associate Professor rank at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

* Minimum of two years' experience teaching medical students

Professor:

* M.D. or D.O. Degree or equivalent with a concentration in healthcare and education and medical licensure in the State of Colorado.

* Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (open rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

* Minimum of two years' experience teaching medical students

Preferred Qualifications:

* Preferred start date of July 1, 2026

* Prior participation in the Coach-coaching program in DOCS.

* Experience delivering structured peer feedback.

* Background in faculty development or SP-based teaching.

* Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, and a reflective humanistic approach to coaching, role modeling, and mentoring also preferred
