Leidos has an immediate need for a Research Associate III to support the Combat Casualty Care & Operational Medicine Directorate at the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio TX.NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supports laboratory-based research applying the latest scientific knowledge towards the solution of a broad range of theoretical and practical problems in the areas of trauma, hemorrhage and resuscitation, immunomodulation, directed energy health effects, and craniofacial health and trauma

  • Coordinates and schedules the implementation of research studies and activities, including maintenance of study records and overall project tracking

  • Collects and manages data for research projects using complex laboratory experiments, scientific techniques, and literature reviews; maintains data and records securely, including use of an assigned laboratory notebook

  • Modifies, plans, and schedules research experiment procedures, analyses, and tests; assists in the execution of research projects

  • Recommend changes to protocols and standard operating procedures for research under contract and for review by the Government

  • Assists in the preparation, revision, and editing of key government and scientific documents, including Performance Work Statements (PWS), IACUC and IRB protocols, proposals, manuscripts, reports, and presentations

  • Advises in research design

  • Initiates, maintains, and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements and protocols for IACUC and IRB, including coordination of study records and support for internal and external audits

  • Assists in procurement, ordering, inventory management, and market research for supplies, equipment, maintenance services, and animal procurement related to research under contract

  • Handle and restrain (daily) various small and large animal species

  • Conducts and supports surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping for contract personnel, and ensuring specific pathogen free techniques

  • Aids the Principal Investigator (PI) in tracking and updating established project budgets

  • Assists in maintaining a clean, safe, and operational laboratory environment

  • Reports on the status of research activities and contributes to writing and editing materials for publications and presentations

  • Oversee and instructs contract personnel on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance

Qualifications

  • Masters degree plus 3 years experience with combat casualty care and pre-clinical animal models, including hemorrhagic shock, polytrauma, blast injury, burn injury, ocular trauma, and laser exposure models

  • Expertise in animal surgery, including survival and non-survival procedures, vascular cannulation, controlled hemorrhage and resuscitation, micro-surgical techniques and blood and tissue collections

  • Proficient in development and execution of in vivo injury models

  • Expertise in molecular and cellular biology techniques, including tissue cultures, RNA/DNA isolations, PCR, Immuno- histochemistry, immuno-fluorescence, ELISA, and multiplex cytokine assays

  • Experience with experimental designs, histopathology, biomarker analysis, image quantification, data interpretations

  • Prior experience in a military medical laboratory preferred

  • Ability to obtain and maintain required life-support certifications (AHA BLS, Healthcare Provider Course, or American Red Cross CPR; web-based courses not accepted)

  • Willingness to complete annual occupational health exams to maintain facility access clearance
