Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,000 to $99,500/year. The full salary range for this position is $81,600.00 to $147,800.00/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the general direction of the Executive Director, the Assistant Director for A.S. Technology & Infrastructure is responsible for the strategic leadership, management, and collaborative development of Associated Students' technological infrastructure. The position oversees computer, web, network, server, and strategic technical support and policy for a department of over 40 career staff and hundreds of student staff, and elected officials across six separate department locations. Serving as the highest-level subject matter expert and technical escalation point for the technology team, the Assistant Director supervises the Website Developer, Information Technology Administrator, and Helpdesk Technician, as well as a team of student IT assistants. Provides advanced architectural direction, mentorship, and tier-3 support across all supervised domains, including web development and design, server and network administration, and desktop support operations. To guarantee that independent, student-driven goals are successfully achieved, the Assistant Director must possess the specialized expertise to effectively translate the unique technological needs of student-led initiatives to central Campus Information Technology team, securing critical buy-in, alignment, and collaborative support from campus partners. The Assistant Director holds primary operational responsibility for the campus-wide Events and Ticketing system, coordinating critical networking hardware across multiple campus facilities. Additionally, the role manages and coordinates the technical execution of the campus-wide student elections process, securely bringing together multiple campus departments, ballot initiatives, and candidates into a single, cohesive voting infrastructure.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree Required in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 4-6 years managing an information technology organization
  • 4-6 years Experience with Critical thinking, persuasions/negotiation, conflict resolution, mentoring and staff development, leadership/management, problem solving, human resources policies and procedures relating to management responsibilities. Required
  • 4-6 years Advanced experience using IT security systems and tools Required
  • 4-6 years Experience configuring and managing network tools. Prior work in network administration, IT security, or cyber security. Experience in penetration, vulnerability, and incident response. Required
  • 4-6 years Experience with assessing business needs to determine how people, business processes and computer technology can be used to help accomplish the departmental objectives Required
  • Applies advanced Information Technology theories and concepts to manage and provide solutions.
  • Requires a broad working knowledge of the applications programming development function.
  • Requires the ability to gather, organize, and analyze data in the completion of assignments.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.
  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, to include the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
  • Ability to understand the process involved to adapt, integrate, and modify existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within the technical environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to individuals and groups with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication.
  • Experience of analyzing buy vs. build procurement for products for effective and efficient technology use.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 50% Tech Team Personnel Management & Leadership - Supervises, directs, and evaluates the daily work of three full-time technical career employees: the Website Developer (Applications Programmer 2), Information Technology Administrator (Information Systems Analyst 2), and Helpdesk Technician (Business/Tech Support Analyst 2 TX), as well as a team of student IT assistants. Performs the full range of supervisory responsibilities, including employee onboarding and training, assigning and prioritizing work, approving time records and leave requests, providing ongoing coaching and feedback, conducting performance evaluations, supporting professional development, and addressing performance or conduct concerns. Establishes clear technical priorities and work plans to align team resources with evolving student-led initiatives, departmental operations, security requirements, and organizational needs. Provides leadership and technical direction across web development, application development, server and network administration, information security, and desktop and helpdesk support. Serves as the department's highest-level technical subject matter expert and escalation point for the Tech Team, providing architectural direction, advanced troubleshooting, technical mentorship, and tier-three support across the areas managed by supervised staff. Maintains sufficient technical expertise across all supervised areas to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of employees' work, establish infrastructure and development priorities, identify risks, guide complex troubleshooting, and ensure that technical solutions meet departmental and University requirements. Promotes a collaborative, respectful, and accountable working environment. Establishes clear expectations, encourages teamwork and open communication, and supports employees in meeting individual, team, and departmental goals. Exercises sound judgment and professionalism during periods of disagreement, organizational change, competing priorities, service interruptions, or other high-pressure situations. Communicates respectfully, objectively, and constructively, with an emphasis on identifying solutions and maintaining standards consistent with University and Associated Students expectations. Consults with the Assistant Director of Human Resources regarding employee performance, conduct, and disciplinary matters. Formal disciplinary processes, documentation, and coordination with Employee & Labor Relations are managed through the Assistant Director of Human Resources, with the supervisor providing relevant information, documentation, and participation as appropriate.
  • 35% Strategic Technology Infrastructure - The Assistant Director provides high-level strategic research, design, and leadership for Associated Students' (A.S. ) technological infrastructure. Ensures the department remains nimble and independent to optimally support its student-driven mission, funded by student fees, while adapting to the priorities of the ever changing student leadership. Drives the adoption of new technologies across the department, researching and deploying modern tools and concepts to streamline complex administrative workflows to enhance the departments' capabilities, modernize operations and autonomize complex processes. The position conducts high-level trending data analysis to inform strategic planning and resource allocation for a diverse set of A.S. services. The Assistant Director is the global administrator for desktop, network and server systems. Manages advanced services provided to staff and students, including email, websites, custom applications, calendaring, backup, storage, databases, and more. Secures Linux-based systems in a complex environment. Oversees new computer & server purchases to guarantee the association does not fall behind the modern technical requirements of the A.S. user base. Drives the adoption of new technologies across the department, researching concepts to streamline complex administrative workflows. Establishes priorities for existing and emerging projects. Provides oversight of computer systems and infrastructure for A.S. Manages technical team in their mission to improve and modernize hardware/software/training operations. Establishes minimum requirements and standardizes approximately 300 computer systems in A.S. to ensure optimum use by staff, student staff, and students. Manages programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources with a high degree of autonomy. Manages and monitors operational budgets for A.S. Technology Infrastructure. Presents topics to individuals and groups with varying levels of technical sophistication, including staff and students. Provides reports to the Executive Director on broad aspects of computer operations. Participates in goal development, strategic planning, crisis prevention, problem-solving, and advising as part of the management group.
  • 5% Web & Application Infrastructure - Leads the web development team in the design, testing, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of Associated Students websites. Develops plans, architecture, and technical structures for complex websites supporting student-led and staff-led A.S. entities. Oversees the administration, security, and maintenance of department-wide WordPress installations. Provides technical leadership and guidance to department directors in identifying informational goals and developing effective digital solutions that meet each area's operational needs. Responsible for creating and implementing complex custom web and application-based solutions for the department and A.S. entities, including platforms supporting student elections, student travel, and other department programs. Provides expert-level technical leadership and oversight to the Website Developer. Applies advanced programming, database, and systems knowledge to evaluate and approve custom web and application-based solutions, including those developed using Python, PHP, SQL, and related frameworks. Evaluates and approves the underlying architecture and frameworks for custom web and mobile applications. Establishes and enforces security, hosting, accessibility, and performance standards for the department's 80-plus WordPress installations. Ensures all digital platforms and web infrastructure comply with A.S. and University requirements, including adherence to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level A and Level AA success criteria across devices.
  • 5% Campus-Wide Initiatives, Projects and Partnerships - Serves as the IT liaison and technical bridge between Associated Students and central Campus Information Technology, including various campus IT organizations and departments. Required to join and actively participate in campus-wide committees to champion student needs and represent A.S. interests. A critical component of this role is maintaining the independent, nimble nature of A.S. Technology. A.S. is funded by student fees and driven by the rapid, ever-changing priorities of student leadership, this department must remain a distinct, agile entity to execute its mission. Must thoughtfully and effectively translate the unique technological needs of student-led initiatives to central Information Technology leadership to ensure campus partners buy-in. The Assistant Director guarantees that independent, student-driven goals (such as the Go Gaucho/UCSB app, the Food Recovery app, and the Isla Vista Landlord-Tenant review) are successfully achieved and capable of operating smoothly within the broader university ecosystem.
  • 5% A.S. and campus Annual Elections - Coordinates the intricate technical and logistics for the execution of campus-wide elections. Solidifies vital, collaborative relationships with the Graduate Student Association, and Campus Elections Commission for the joint election process. Includes development and maintenance of a complex Elections website, ranked voting tabulation system, and custom voting portal for all graduate and undergraduate students. Works with the Registrar's office to ensure coordination of GOLD messages and registered student extraction. Tests voting software, creates online ballots, ensures final language of CEC, GSA, and AS is correctly updated and uploaded and each area approves their section of the ballot. Monitors elections for errors, records daily turnout, implements fixes as needed, tallies final results using in-house custom software voting tabulation system, and generates a custom display of results for use by the Elections Committee.
