Summary of Position
Under the general supervision of CCOM Data Visualization Research Lab Director Thomas Butkiewicz, employee will perform basic research in data visualization and related computer science topics in support of ocean mapping, hydrographic, and marine navigation applications, interpret results of research, determine scientific significance, and participate in dissemination and publication of results.

Other minimum qualifications
1. Doctorate or equivalent professional degree in computer science or other data visualization related discipline (e.g. computer graphics, virtual reality, HCI, etc.), with doctoral research closely related to project work; while doctorate degree is preferred, we may also consider a combination of a Master's degree in computer science or discipline related to data visualization and at least three years of closely related research experience.
2. Extensive knowledge of computer programming and appropriate data analysis techniques.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
1. Knowledge of, and experience coding with C/C++/C# and OpenGL. Also helpful would be experience with Unity, WebGL, Javascript, PHP, SQL, or HTML/ XML.
2. Experience with Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality/Mixed Reality or other 3D User Interaction techniques/technologies.
3. Ability to perform statistical analysis on human factors studies data/observations to determine study results and statistical significance.
4. Knowledge of human perceptual issues related to data visualization.
5. Excellent academic writing ability and publication record.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Participate in the planning, design, implementation, operation, testing and/or evaluation of data visualization and interaction research projects focused on hydrography, ocean mapping, and marine navigation, including the collection and collation of results.


Duty/Responsibility

  • Participate in the design, development, and calibration of tools for data collection, including specialized scientific equipment, devices, or instruments.
  • This includes tools for collecting hydrographic data in the field (e.g. camera systems) and data in the lab (e.g. logging user interaction data in human factors studies).



Duty/Responsibility
  • Participate in the analysis, organization, maintenance, and evaluation of hydrographic, ocean mapping, marine navigation, and human factors studies data, including development of computer programs, determination of the data's significance, diagnosis and evaluation of problems with the data, and the statistical analysis and preparation of results for publication or distribution.

  • Present results of data visualization and interaction research in various formats, including through publications, seminars, or professional conferences.

  • Consult with and establish relationships with other scientists, researchers, and practitioners in project area of expertise, as well as stakeholders in funding agencies (e.g. NOAA) and industrial partners.

  • Supervise and/or advise graduate students on research projects; supervise and/or provide tutorial assistance to undergraduate students in area of expertise, as assigned.

  • Serve as primary resource for questions related to the data and research projects, and provide information related to research projects to varied audiences, as required.
  • This includes demonstrations of lab research projects and technologies to stakeholders, students, and other lab visitors.
